How Organisms adapt to climate
Animal adaptations:
Plant Adaptations:
- Migration and hibernation are two adaptations used by the animals in this biome.
- Birds migrate to warmer places where they can find food more easily.
- Some mammals hibernate during the cold winter months
- Other animals store large supplies of food such as nuts and seeds in the ground under leaves, or in tree hollows for use during the cold winters when food is scarce.
Plant Adaptations:
- Deciduous trees shed their leaves once a year at the approach of cold or dry season and later grow new leaves.
- In summer, their broad green leaves help capture sunlight needed to make food through photosynthesis.
- As temperatures drop, the trees cut off the supply of water to the leaves. With limited sunlight and water, the leaves are unable to produce chlorophyll causing them to change into the colors you see during the fall. (re, yellow, and orange)
- Because it is too cold in the winter, trees cannot protects their leaves from freezing. They lose their leaves to help conserve water loss through transpiration.
- The warmer temperatures of Spring signal to the trees that they can grow new leaves again and restart the cycle.
